HR Headaches - An additional symptom of coronavirus for business owners and leaders

Written by A.R.Fairbank@swansea.ac.uk / Friday 3rd April 2020

In our latest blog, our North Wales based Leadership Development Officer Kathryn Roberts provides some useful signposts for businesses hoping to alleviate HR coronavirus headaches.

The lucky few will have the support of a HR professional to give them advice on how best to alleviate the pain of any current coronavirus HR headaches. However, for many, this is not the case. The sheer volume of information out there for any person to take on board, whilst running a business in the current environment, is enough to trigger a headache.

I thought it would beneficial to signpost you to some useful resources which, as a business owner and leader, may provide valuable assistance:

  • Advisory, Conciliation & Arbitration Service (ACAS) - There website provides useful workplace advice for employers and employees on everything from employment contracts and working from home, to pay and wages.
  • Gov.UK - Provides guidance for employees, employers and businesses related to Covid-19
  • Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) – Useful information and advice for UK employers aimed at supporting your business and workforce during this global health emergency. The website includes information on flexible resourcing plans, staying informed and looking after peoples health, safety and wellbeing.

My top 5 tips

  1. Breathe!
  2. Talk to your employees openly and honestly. These are unprecedented times, and you don’t have all the answers.
  3. Seek help and stay connected with your team, customers, network, suppliers and friends.
  4. Breathe (again!)
  5. If the situation stops you or your business from working, contact one of the links above for further support.
